So Don at Four Dog has the steel stoves listed on his site now - he's had more made since I bought mine (as a special order he allowed to go through due to confusion on the website). haha. He took the stoves OFF the website but he posted on his blog as a note that he has stoves available.
So Don explains he makes "expedition quality" titanium stoves - vid
Now you'll note his critique of the recent marketing of stoves that he calls...
"If you're looking for just the weekend and you're not concerned about longevity or durability there's other people who make..."Oops! Yes his stove design is not even comparable to the other stoves....
I don't know anyone that would go on an expedition with one of those...
In other words - no long term camping...
So his stove has "reinforced" fire box channels...so the "fire box won't collapse"
So then he says he sticks pieces of wood through the legs so that the legs stay on the snow and don't melt down....
And the reason he has a gap in the bottom is get more primary air and then the screen diverts the air and causes it to mix...
Then he reinforces the "collar" where the stove pipe goes in....
Why don't you make the foil type stove pipe?
I tried it and didn't like it and at 20 below zero I didn't want to be rolling a large piece of spring steel into a tube and put little keepers on it.
Then he also has a false bottom to the stove to add to durability and better cold start of the stove by insulating the stove box.
So that stove that he's been making since 1999 is an amazing design!!
So in one fell swoop he completely critiques the new "trend" of these cheaper titanium stoves.
Now lets look at the critique of stove in the comments section:
I am wondering what is the heat transfer rate? If titanium stays cool longer than steel you would need more wood to generate heat. My cast iron stove generates heat for up to two hours after the fire has gone out.
So the trade off in lighter weight and less Burn Out of the metal is that you lose heat faster because the metal is less dense and the metal heats up more slowly so doesn't store up the heat.
So also his stove is way too big for what I would need. So a smaller wood stove that I made myself ways a bit more than his titanium stove - but it will hold heat longer. And as for NOT getting the collapsible titanium stoves - Don clearly gives the reasons why NOT to get one. haha.
