This is a great image from the book. I recently blogged how the image/concept of the embryo/child in neidan alchemy is actually from a much older source.
And so Pregadio emphasizes that of the 5 elements - all returns to soil, yuan qi, as the Yi, in the end. Fire is extinguished and returned to soil.
The crucial point being that the "One" as soil, yuan qi, is actually the "wu" and "ji" combined together - yang-yin together as the One. Or "three in one" unity.
And so this book, Awakening to Reality (pdf link), gives more details to the trigrams and hexagrams of alchemy - and therefore is the key companion text to Wang Mu (translated by Pregadio) - Foundations of Internal Alchemy. And so just as the 1615 book was the key source for the book Taoist Yoga: Alchemy and Immortality - so too did Wang Mu rely on this book, Awakening to Reality, that cites other books from over 1000 years ago:
So then we can understand the upper body as yang, fire, male, as shen spirit - why? Because Heaven gives its female inner energy - the yin qi - to Earth, and so heaven turns into fire (such that the unified shen-qi is not separated into subconscious qi with shen going out the eyes).... and vice versa - Earth receives the yin qi of Heaven and so turns into Water with the inner yang qi as (the hidden combined yin qi of dragon and tiger) manifesting as "substance" externally....
And so in our normal waking state - the True Yin and True Yang are separated and so the power of "vital force" or "yuan qi" is unknown. It is only by inverting or reversing the course of material reality - is the original qi then known consciously - via the shen, the spiritual ego or astral body that feeds off the qi.
Cinnbar holds mercury - means the Fire as red heart spirit blood holds the yin qi of the Hun Soul.
Water or Jade Pond as Kan is Black kidney but holds the Silver as White (lung). So now we reach the KEY secret of alchemy. The lung, white, has to be sent DOWN (after it is first sublimated as kidney energy)....
And so via the pineal gland - the True yin of the blood and true yang of the cerebrospinal fluid - merge and then by moving back down - the cerebrospinal fluid is purified - after the blood increases the cerebrospinal fluid. And so the "impurities" of the blood (the yin qi) are used to increase the yang qi (the storing of charge in the lecithin) - signified as the Full Moon - meaning the Solar shen can now shine forth - emitted and stored coherent laser biophotons.
And once the ancestral cavity is open to join with the mysterious gate manifesting as enlightenment, then the macrocosmic orbit is activated, such that the movement of the Moon with the Sun in relation to the Earth (and the stars) - the backwards wobble of the Earth, as the precessional movement of the zodiac, a 25,000 year cycle, - is reflected internally as the cycling of energy.
So then Yellow Sprouts refers to the yin qi as Mercury that goes up (the green dragon that was the red dragon as blood of the heart) while the Sweet Dew goes down from the brain - as the increased and purifed cerebrospinal fluid - as the White Tiger of the lungs (formerly the black tiger of the kidneys).
And so this alchemical process of inversion or return is just the inverse or making explicit that which takes place constantly but is hidden - on the higher "frequency" level of reality (really noncommutative phase as yin-yang).
And so the process of inversion, ultimately is a mirror form to that which happens naturally all the time, as the root origin of spacetime itself.
So in the book Taoist Yoga: Alchemy and Immortality - the Hun Soul is called a "yin shen" - but that is just it's external appearance and not its true origin.
And so the deep Quick Fire breathing is how the post-celestial Po-Soul enables the inversion of the Yang manifestion allowing the loss of True Yin, while the Meditation Slow Fire is how the post-celestial Hun-soul enables the inversion of the yin manifestion to stop the loss of True Yang.
So Yellow Sprouts is actually the True Yang within the yin (the rises up as True Mercury (Green Dragon) after it has descended from the yin qi of the heart) and and White Snow is the True Yin (aka True Mercury, White Tiger) within the yang (the descends back down the front). And so the Mercury of the blood thus becomes purified as True Yin that descends back down to the lower tan t'ien.
So you have: (Fire, Water, Metal, Wood) and (Heaven, Earth, Fire and Water) that resolve back to Soil as the yuan (yin-yang) alchemical qi.
The North and the Center then "merge" - as the lower tan t'ien since the Cosmic North is the Northern Dipper Pole Star but is also the "center" of the universe and thus water is the first element to be generated as the North and alchemical source of the Yuan Qi.
And so then we realize there is an "inversion of the inversion" - meaning that the True Yin is the White Tiger that flows down as the True Mercury - and the True Yang is the Green Dragon that is sublimated up as the True Lead. Whereas the mercury going down as yin qi is the red lead or red dragon and therefore neither the true mercury nor the true lead. The black tiger going up as the yang qi is the green dragon as the yellow sprouts that turns into the white tiger that goes down as the True Mercury (the silver extracted from the red going down originally). Therefore the true Lead is yang, going up and the true mercury is yin going down but manifests from the green dragon (not the red dragon) and the white tiger (not the black tiger). The True Lead (going down) is the inversion of the inverse of the Red Lead (dragon) going down. The True Mercury (Silver-White) is the inversion of the inversion Black Water (tiger) going up....
And so the "Three" then are True Yang, True Yin and Intention (Soil) - and THIS is the "three in one" unity secret of alchemy. When True Yang and True Yin emerge, then YuanShen has to lead the qi to continue to build up the True Yang from the True Yin.
Thus, contrary to what Leak states, it is Metal that returns to Water (Sweet Dew or White Snow as Earth) and Wood that returns to Fire (Yellow Sprouts as Heaven)....
And so the process is the result of creating the True Yin (that goes down the front) and True Yang (that goes up the back)....and thus Yin-Yang are joined together.
So we extract the Silver (mercury) from the Cinnabar (red blood) that has coagulated into Earth by meditation and sublimating up the Green Dragon (True Yang) so that the Black Tiger then turns into the White tiger (True Yin) that goes back down. Therefore the True Yang is actually the yin that has been inverted back into Earth, from Heaven and the True Yin is the yang that has been inverted from the Earth back into Heaven.
So then in the commentary - it is confirmed that, as Taoist Yoga also states, the Hun and Po souls are "post-celestial" or yin shen - NOT pre-celestial (as someone claimed on thedaobums)....
Water Storing Heaven is Number One - the Jade Pond (lead). Therefore Earth (as post-celestial Water) comes from Heaven.
Fire storing Earth is number 2 - the Flowing Pearl (mercury) that ever desires to leave you (as post-celestial Fire comes from Earth).
Reverted Elixir is formed by joining the two breaths (yin and yang qi) and therefore called the Male Tiger or True Lead and Female Dragon or True Mercury.And so "Mysterious-Female" actually means Tiger-Dragon! In other words "Mysterious" is a separate NOUN and not an adjective!
Innate nature corresponds to Wood (liver as yin qi) and emotions corresponds to Metal (lungs as yang qi). Nature has to be stable (Wu) and emotions have to be harmonized (Ji) to return to the Taiji as Wuji.
"Relying on the other in the position of Kun, it comes to life and acquires a body, and then is planted within the house of Qian, the place of conjunction.Sweet Dew comes down from Heaven and therefore is the True Lead or Yang component generated from water, but related to metal.
Yellow Sprouts comes up from Earth and therefore is the True Mercury or Yin component generated from fire, but related to wood.
This is the double inversion - as reverted elixir. First the yin qi goes DOWN from the heart (as liver qi) and then rises UP as water, aka Green Dragon, Yellow Sprouts - wood that sprouts from the fire being reversed. Secondly then the fire goes DOWN as the white tiger - when the water reacts with the fire - as the White Tiger, now the True Lead (as fire that goes down, due to the water pulling it down the front).

The triagram Li is fire and predominantly yang, but the important middle line is yin, and so the Dragon is female. It is the yin essence in the yang, water in fire, the female in the male, the moon in the sun. It is referred to as Green Dragon....It is water that rises, being heated, and is therefore fiery but yielding, rising to Heaven. The triagram K'an/Kan is Water and predominantly yin and female. But the middle line is yang and alchemically it is the yang in the yin, the White Tiger, ....its function is to descend to Earth when fire reacts with it. It is the fire in the water.
