Who is Lawrence Barr Crowell? On Noncommutative Mini-Black Holes as spacetime lenses for population inversion of time-frequency nonlocality

I searched a concept I did a video upload about - and found a corroborating quote from "Lawrence B. Crowell" in his book. I ordered the book - hard cover science book. Only $10 including shipping!! The Amazon review tries to dismiss the book as fake science.

 Lawrence B. Crowell Aracne editrice

The name was familiar to me and then I remembered a reader here recently encouraged me to read Lawrence B. Crowell's essay on Time. Crowell published on a science website that does not have any kind of peer-review connection. But he also gets articles published in peer-review journals - although the "Foundations of Physics Letters" journal was deemed fake by the above critic review on Amazon.

Lawrence B. Crowell

I have not read the full paper yet. It is a long one. There are clearly some questions that could be raised. It would seem to me that the black holes here need some type of BPS charge or quantum number. In scanning through this the authors do not seem to employ this.

The black hole solution with some charge can be extended at the extremal limit to an AdS spacetime. So it might be fair to say that the universe is ultimately a black hole in some quantum gravity sense.

Lawrence B. Crowell

He's got a lot of interesting comments on the "Universe Today" science journal.

Here's the quote I posted on my youtube upload:

Quantum Fluctuations Of Spacetime by Lawrence Barr Crowell, (Institute of Advanced Study, Budapest) World Scientific, Dec 16, 2005:

"Consider an experiment where a quantum black hole of some small number ...units of mass is maintained. The quantum black hole is produced by high energy collision of two particles, where subsequent particles are sent to scatter in and out of the black hole at a rate sufficient to keep the black hole from quantum evaporating away. This is analogous to the maintenance of a population inversion in a lasing medium of atoms."

p. 323

This is precisely the same concept that I was describing in my video upload!!

The Amazon critical review says that Gerard 't Hooft took over the Foundations of Physics journal and then weeded out the co-author of Lawrence B. Crowell as fake science. The thing is that Lawrence B. Crowell appears to be closely matching the views of Roger Penrose and Penrose recently had a big spat with 't Hooft on a Zoom discussion.

Lawrence B. Crowell claims to be affiliated with the "Alpha Institute of Advanced Study" in Budapest. This institute does not actually appear to exist, except in Mr. Crowell's imagination. There is also an "Alpha Institute for Advanced Studies" (note the "for" and plural "Studies"), run by Myron W. Evans, who has written his own book in collaboration with Mr. Crowell, published by the same publisher. At one time, Evans was able to publish a series of papers in a junk journal called Foundations of Physics Letters. These papers made a number of crackpot claims, such as disproof of Einstein's theory of relativity and propagation of electromagnetic forces at infinite speed. When the journal was rolled into Foundations of Physics, under a new and well known editor, Gerard 't Hooft, 't Hooft felt compelled to solicit three papers debunking Evans' ideas, and to write an editorial disassociating the journal from them.

Crowell says inside the book that certain portions of it were written by Robert Betts, of the UMass Boston math department. This might give the impression that Betts was on the faculty at UMass. In fact, Betts received an undergraduate degree from UMass in 2002, three years before the date of this book.

Finally, there is the question of the credibility of the publisher, World Scientific, Singapore. My opinion of its credibility is pretty low, since it also published the book that Crowell co-authored with the kook Evans. It also seems unlikely that Crowell's editor at World Scientific had sufficient expertise to judge the merit of the book, since the book is not on chemistry, but it is listed as being part of the "World Scientific Series in Contemporary Chemical Physics." In fact, the book does not appear to have been touched by an editor at all, since it is full of mangled sentences.

As to the contents of the book, Crowell has managed to stir together a lot of fancy terminology in a manner that might fool the uninitiated into believing that he was really doing cutting-edge research. The book is actually nonsense. For example, he has a section titled "Godel's Theorem in Quantum Mechanics," which shows that he has no real understanding of Godel's incompleteness theorems, or why they have essentially no relevance in physics.

 Crowell:

The bone I have to throw is that the zitterbewegung, obtained from the energy of a particle at that scale with a frequency by E = hf and E = mc^2

f = mc^2/h.

I think that this motion is induced by a noncommutative geometry associated with a “mirror gauge”-like field. Some physics such as Bose-Einstein condensates likely has connections with this....

This is a duality principle, and curiously it has connections to black holes (oh the horror, the inhumanity of it all!  ). An event horizon according to an accelerated observer will appear more and more as a quantum singularity, so the stretched horizon changes its behavior. I can’t go into great depth on this, and the UT moderators want to avoid “theory mongering.”....

So quark gluon plasmas are thought to have amplitudes associated with black holes.

 .....

The singularity only becomes important for a highly accelerated frame close to the event horizon, for a quantum black hole, or for the observer who choses to enter the black hole. For a highly accelerated frame the Hawking radiation of the horizon assumes singularity-like behavior. An observer (here a fictional observer of sorts) very close to the horizon with a huge acceleration that keeps them stationary will observe a huge radiation flux and physics similar to that near the interior singularity. This leads to the quantum black hole. In this case the horizon and the singularity becomes quantum superposed with each other. The singularity is no longer a mathematical infinity, but rather an instanton of the quantum gravity field.

This leads to a curious duality with the black hole, for the quantum black hole (a small black hole of atomic or subatomic size) exhibits physics similar to a large black holeas observed by an accelerated observer at a static point relative to the event horizon. There are all sorts of subtle issues with equivalence principle and universal frame bundles here! This duality also connects with the Susskind stretched horizon and holography. This duality connects to the duality noted by Wheeler, that there are two dual perspectives of a BH: That of the exterior observer and the observer who enters into the BH.

 .............

So he claims to have done his "graduate study" at Purdue University then he signs some papers as affiliated with University of New Mexico, ... and the rest of a self-created think tank in New Mexico that is also in Budapest Hungary (showing an apartment building)....

The velocity of a wave is determined by the index of refraction n, and the phase velocity (velocity of the actual wave front) is v_p = c/n, where here I am assuming photons. The index of refraction from the group velocity is

for f a frequency. The group velocity is then v_g = c/n_g. So this involves the velocity of Fourier modes, which can be much higher than the speed of light......

You can think of the center of the wave packet as the phase front, which for a photon can only travel v = c/n, but the wave packet can spread so various modes reach stupendous velocities. The velocity of the center of the wave packet, think of it as the mean (or the quantum probability velocity or momentum) is limited by relativity.

This is an apparent superluminal velocity due to an angular effect.

A beach wave might reach the shore at a slight angle and the point where the crash happens will move along the shore much faster than the wave is moving....

The superluminous velocity is similar to a group velocity, which can be faster than light for a single particle or photon. Two charged species in an ionized gas can have charged waves, a sort of group velocity for currents, which can propagate faster than light. Another way to think of this, it is a bit like the “wave” in a stadium crowd, where the wave can move much faster than the speed each person moved up or down. Since the individual species do not travel faster than light there are no causality violations.

In this article it is shown that a massless particle coupled to noncommutative coordinate geometry is subjected to a gauge-like force. This force acts to trap the massless particle in an orbit within a region. This bottled massless particle then has an induced mass. This is then argued to be tied to fundamental aspects of physics, such as a dynamical Higgs model, as well as strings and p-brane theory.
The quaternionic division algebra is noncommutative by definition.

I have had some communciations with Garrett Lisi and others on just this issue of extending the framing system to a graded Lie algebraic structure.

. The field theoretic information on the
event horizon is correlated quantum mechanically with quantum information interior to the black hole. The
mysterious singularity of a black hole accessible to an observer who falls inward is related by some quantum
complementarity to information absorbed on the event horizon as detected by the exterior observer.

So Lawrence B. Crowell coauthored with someone that Gerard 't Hooft dismissed as a crank.

But I saw Roger Penrose try to dismiss Gerard 't Hooft as a crank - and they're both Nobel Physicists. haha.

Clearly Crowell's views are closer to Penrose - if not essentially the same.

OK so that's MYRON EVAN's think tank!!

The AIAS founder and President is Prof. Myron W. Evans, who has recently received two high honors of the British Government, a Civil List Pension in 2005, and armorial bearings in 2008.
M .W. Evans and J.-P. Vigier

OH - now I get it - he was tied to de Broglie via Vigier. Fascinating.

OK so Evans was correcting the de Broglie-Einstein equation by using a "scalar curvature" that now Lawrence B. Crowell equates with noncommutativity.

No wonder 't Hooft was freaked out - he doesn't seem to engage much with noncommutativity - although he edited a book that included an Alain Connes chapter...

Figure 1. The scalar potential is a harmonic set of phase conjugate longitudinal EM waves.

So then Myron Evans and even J.P. Vigier argued this allowed extraction of "free energy" - wow - this is VERY similar to my concept. But they did not quite capture the noncommutativity concept yet.

Bearden then founded and directed the Alpha Foundation's Institute for Advanced Study (AIAS) to further propagate his theories. This group has published papers in established physics journals and in books published by leading publishing houses, but one analysis lamented these publications because the texts were "full of misconceptions and misunderstandings concerning the theory of the electromagnetic field."[53] When Bearden was awarded U.S. Patent 6,362,718 in 2002, the American Physical Society issued a statement against the granting.[51] The United States Patent and Trademark Office said that it would reexamine the patent and change the way it recruits examiners, and re-certify examiners on a regular basis, to prevent similar patents from being granted again.[54]

Ahhh...

Wow I had no idea that Tom Bearden coauthored with J.P. Vigier

The book was compiled as a tribute to Jean-Pierre Vigier on the occasion of his 80th birthday. It begins with a preface by Stanley Jeffers outlining Vigier's life. He worked closely with Louis de Broglie and David Bohm, and helped to pioneer the de Broglie-Bohm-Vigier approach to quantum physics, also known as the causal stochastic interpretation. The main features of this approach and how it evolved are explained in an introduction by Lev Chebotarev. The bulk of the book consists of 22 facsimile reprints of papers on quantum mechanics authored or coauthored by J.P. Vigier. There is also a biography of Vigier's works. Most of the papers are, at least in part, highly technical, but much of the discussion and analysis of the contending interpretations of quantum physics can be readily understood by nonspecialists.

So essentially all this work is derivative of Vigier.

The photon mass m is very tiny but as I showed in 1991 with the discovery of the B(3) field, is identically non zero. Vigier pointed out the connection between B(3) and photon mass.

I would simply say that the geometry of Einsteinian general relativity is completely incorrect due to the neglect of torsion, so all of Sarfatti’s conjectures are crass pseudoscience. I have never had any direct dealings with Sarfatti, but he did have some correspondence with my co author Lawrence Crowell. As far as I know Crowell stopped communicating with Sarfatti many years ago.

So by torsion again they mean noncommutativity.

Lawrence Crowell once mentioned to me that the standard model has at least seventeen adjustable parameters, so I rejected it immediately as meaningless.

In the 2001 book by Lawrence Crowell and myself (posted in the Omnia Opera), a new electroweak theory is proposed based on an O(3) symmetry electrodynamics. The latter is further reviewed in volumes 119(2) and 119(3) of “Advances in Chemical Physics” (also posted in the Omnia Opera section). The O(3) electrodynamics is homomorphic with the published and refereed Barrett, Harmuth and Lehnert electrodynamics, and based on the well known Yang Mills gauge theory. It is now widely known that I was attacked by unscholarly publishing in the nineties. These unscholarly attacks may be ignored by scientists. These precursor theories of ECE were further developed in the five volumes of “The Enigmatic Photon”, with Vigier, a sometime assistant of de Broglie and one of the greatest theoretical physicists of the late twentieth century. These are severe criticisms of the idea that electrodynamics must have a U(1) sector symmetry – the basis of the Glashow Weinberg Salaam (GWS) electroweak theory which uses the Higgs mechanism. From 2003 onwards the Einstein Cartan Evans (ECE) theory rejects the Higgs mecahnism in favour of general relativity.

I don’t know what happened to Crowell.

Yeah or how he even got started? A ph.d. thesis maybe somewhere? Nope.

So the claim here is that Vigier was coaxed into being an author - later on?

TROVON DE CARVALHO, A. L.; RODRIGUES, W. A. (2001). The non sequitur mathematics and physics of the “New Electrodynamics” proposed by the AIAS group. Random Operators and Stochastic Equations, 9(2), –. doi:10.1515/rose.2001.9.2.161

So basically they're stating the whole Whiitake claims of Bearden are actually based on the Hertz Potential Theory... and thus no big deal....
