The Mycologists confirm that I can store my inoculated logs in subzero weather as long as they are out of direct wind and sun!!

Wow - this is fantastic news!

Yes, if you were to inoculate (inside or at a temp at least 40F or warmer and make sure your logs are that temp as well) you could store your inoculated logs inside a shed or shelter until it warms up and you move it back outside. As long as they're not under direct sun and wind they will be alright.

At first I could not believe this response.

So I had to triple check just to make sure!

You CAN store them under freezing temps after inoculation but the spawn will go dormant and not grow until temps warm up. Also make sure you wax the (sawdust) spawn properly because if it freezes and dries it will die.

OK I'm still NOT sure so I need one final clarification!!

Newly inoculated logs can withstand -60F (out of weather, so no direct sun or wind)

BUT it will dry freeze in subzero temperatures and (direct) high winds.

If the spawn is exposed (not sealed well with wax) it will dry which is your biggest concern.

Wow - that is amazing news.

This means I can use my "hermit hut" and my tipi - to store the inoculates logs - as they will be out of sun and wind!

This means I can go inoculate early and then have time to do my lawn work starting in late March.
