So it was my dad's Birthday yesterday. He would be maybe 87? Anyway I thought going up north would be nice as he was born on a "kitchen table" a bit north of where I bought land. My grandfather was the minister for two churches on a huge lake in northern Minnesota. Each church on each end of the lake - so a bit of a drive each Sunday?
Pomoly just posted a vid about the hazard of their stove jack not holding up - so luckily I still had that silicone cooking mat from last winter. So I shoved that in between the stove pipe and stove jack - it's good to 450 or 500 Fahrenheit. Didn't see any burn marks on it.
Because I have that bendable 3 inch stove "elbow" that I ordered from a nearby town (and had it mailed down to where I live normally - and now I drove it back up!) - so then the stove pipe goes out at 45 degrees, thereby preventing any potential embers from falling on the tent (hopefully).
I didn't want to use my new collapsible wood stove because I haven't received the special spark arrester yet. I didn't trust the one that came with the stove - it's just a "hood." My DIY wood stove has a better spark arrester.
So I used the stove damper as a tie off for wire to hold the stove pipe. Not sure how much this will help. the 3 inch iron stove damper kept turning the stove pipe into an OVAL and so the stove pipe came undone as it fit into the other stove pipes. So I just took out the stove jack metal iron insert. Just using the handle as a tie up and to plug off the holes.
So this winter Hot Tent gets too much cold air through the bottom air vent. It probably saved me as the stove as "curing" the stove cement put on to cover up holes. Once the stove cement cured then it stopped smoking the off gas fumes.
There's the DIY wood stove. Normally a wood stove costs about $200 minimum. I think the new one I got for $170 on sale? So this one seems to hold up ok - that top burning off seems to be from the paint.
The interior stove elbow. So it doesn't look like much but sure enough I get to move the stove pipe OFF the tent.
So I put stove gasket around the door - to seal off the top from leaking smoke. Then the bottom of the stove opening has holes drilled in to let air in under the grate that holds the wood. It draws very well if I just leave the door slightly ajar. The right side doesn't close all the way but the left side prevents the door from opening.
The problem is that those are pine needles underneath and they were drying off fast and then it's canvas under that. So I will get a refractory blanket - I saw them sold at Harbor Freight. Then I'll be good to go in case I need to do long term camping.
So I used my new early xmas gift - the Estwing "Fireside Friend" - a four pound "camp maul" to hammer in through the frozen ground. It worked perfectly.
Even made in the US - amazing! Yes it also comes with a "sheath" that is made in Taiwan. And so I kept the sheath on when using the hammer side. But I also split some wood - works just like a real maul. I saw that the real mauls are also four pounds. The store worker had no idea where the Estwing was - he said - if it's not on the shelf then the computer must be wrong when it says there is ONE in the store. haha. In fact, I looked in the hammer section in the Hardware and they had a whole "Estwing" display - and sure enough ONE "fireside Friend." So also this was the ONLY store that actually carried the Fireside Friend that I could find - of half a dozen different types of stores.
You have to be careful though because you're closer to the swing as it comes through. So if you miss the log then it comes back towards your legs. It would be very easy to damage a leg with this thing. haha. I had a couple close misses and then realized I had to keep my legs apart.
So there it is - it t urns out the NEW tent was missing the top cone cover part!! So luckily I got that PVC tent for FREE and I had already treated it with silicone - so I used the cone from the older PVC tent. Then I set up the PVC tent without the cone to air out the strong mineral spirits smell. So it will just fill up with snow. haha.
But Abrupt Global Warming is really evident this winter - so far it's been a balmy winter just below freezing. Not much snow.
It's ABOVE freezing down where I normally live.
