So I didn't think it was that bad but the small town "fluids" shop used their Flo-Dynamics TSD450 - how do I know? I took photos! I even was using my digital recorder - since it was in the car. They were completely nice and forthcoming and even had me look at the dipstick to confirm the levels were back to normal. But get this:
OK that was my first photo - it was fuzzy but later the young man even encouraged me to "record" the info on the machine:
So they said the machine got completely filled up by just the one car - this car - and they said the machine holds 20 quarts. Sure enough - that's what it says:
So they had the car running - so the transmission pump was running - and they said they drained 19.2 quarts. The dealer "lube tech" supposedly did a "pan drop" which would have taken out 5 quarts - and a filter change - but then added back 8 quarts. So the "lube tech" must have thought it was a diesel? Since the pan size on a diesel is a deep pan? Not sure...
FEATURES. Cooler line and dipstick exchange modes; Select any quantity from 1-20 quarts; Power interruption memory; Drains vehicle's transmission for filter ...
Wow - it's amazing that the car survived such treatment.
Luckily I never drove on the interstate - I did go 75 mph to pass a couple cars once - but anyway - when I got the burning rubber smell - that's when I got suspicious. I figured it was just from me using cruise control since I never used cruise control before. No - it was the 4L60E transmission over flow tube - spilling out fluid onto the transmission and engine, etc.
So I personally SAW the machine pumping out the old transmission fluid that it had sucked up and the machine screen said
12.2 quarts
And the machine had been running for awhile - pumping out the old transmission fluid. That means with my own eyes - I saw that it was indeed more fluid than the car transmission can hold - 11.2 quarts is what it is supposed to have.
So now I'm gonna watch their "training" vids to see precisely how this machine works.
So the young man who said he had a chevy that had 250K on it and he had never had the transmission flush since it's a closed system and so imagine how dirty his transmission fluid is but his was still running fine. Sure enough I saw his Silverado parked right there.
He also said he had NEVER seen ONE car transmission fill up the WHOLE machine, requiring him to empty it right away!!
He also said when he checked the dip stick it was way overfilled and he showed with his hands how high it was overfilled - and that was the SAME reading I got also!!
So I really believe him and not the Dealer scam "commission" service advisor and underpaid overworked "lube techs."

So we got this Dipstick Exchange - and it says up to 20 quarts....
training vid
Ok it does the "cooling line" exchange but I want the dipstick exchange....16 minutes it starts!
Then he checked with the dipstick to see that it was way too high. He then used the "remove atf" button to remove.
OK I just called back and talked to the young man's boss - and he said the MACHINE calibrates automatically how much to take out.
On the readout we can observe how many quarts are being put into the vehicle [that's the PAN amount]. Once the Pan has been refilled the word CAR appears on the screen, which signifies that the vehicle needs to be started. Once the vehicle's been started we can return to the machine and again hit the START button. The machine will begin by ADDING one quart of fluid into the vehicle. After that it will ALTERNATE between removing a quart and adding a quart until the full PRESELECTED amount of quarts have been added to the vehicle.
So they must have their machine preselected already - to what amount?
https://www.flodynamics.com/downloads/tech/manuals/TSD450%20Ops%20Manual.pdf
hmmm. So they had to select the amount of the fluid for the exchange...
But the boss said the machine did it automatically and then there was still too much in there - and the machine was filled up. So they did a "treatment" and "cleaner" - so that was another quart plus the 19 quarts - as 20 quarts total.
So they must have used the preselected option that the machine was already set at for GM cars - so it would have been set at 11 quarts.
What are the "option" levels?
So they probably had it set to 12 quarts since that is what the transmission uses. It took 20 minutes?
What's the rate at? 2 1/2 gallons per minute. So 5 gallons equals just two minutes!! wow.
OK so 40 is on the receipt - so I called back and he said that means 40 PINTS. And he said that is what the machine is set at!! So sure enough - they have their "machine automatic" setting at the 20 quart option.
Flo-Dynamics - TSD450 - intro vid
so the used old amount that came out is not necessarily the same as the amount that goes in. It's just that this small town place uses 20 quarts as their amount to put in - and then removes as much needed to get back to the proper level.
different training vid
So the young man told me that 9.9 pints was the PAN amount that was removed and replaced - at the 5 minute cleaning process.
OK so the machine says HOW MUCH of the OLD transmission fluid was in the car as it is removed. The person told me he had NEVER seen that much removed - and it was 19.2 quarts.
So that image I think is set at pints. He told me that the PAN was 9.9 - but that would have been pints I think.
The deep pan will hold about two more quarts of transmission fluid than the shallow pan. Without the torque converter, a stock 4L60e with a shallow pan can hold about 6 quarts of fluid4.95 quarts is 9.9 pints.
So they put in 40 pints but they can only take OUT as much was USED already in the tank. Then after words they remove the "extra" beyond capacity of the 40 pints.
pump specified quantity of ATFBut that's the not the quantity "OUT of" - obviously if you take as much as you put in then you're left with zero. So they put in MORE than they take out. But in this case - they took out 19.2 quarts!!
into transmission (capacities: 4, 12, 16 or 20 quarts)
When finished, add or remove fluid as needed.meaning the amount taken out is NOT the same as the amount put in.
OK so lets say you have 11 quarts in there - you set the exchange at 20 quarts. So it removes 20 quarts of which 9 quarts is NEW fluid - and you are left with 11 quarts left.
So they set it at 20 quarts (and there's 19.2 quarts in there). They remove 20 quarts but it's STILL at 19.2 quarts...The machine only holds 24 quarts - so that's why he had to empty the machine first to finish the job.
The unit automatically adds the same amount of new ATF as was removed
The unit automatically adds the same amount of new ATF as was removed, without monitoring or adjustments.OK so he was claiming that's what the TSD450 does but that's a different machine - the Wynn’s TranServe II+ Automatic Transmission Flush & Fill Machine (Part No. 08601)
OK I called back a third time - and this time talked to the young man directly he said 19.2 PINTS not quarts. So then he said whatever amount the machine exchanged - he had to then remove THREE QUARTS to get it back to the proper level and the "pan drop" before had put in three quarts too much.
That makes perfect sense now since the pan holds five quarts and eight quarts were ADDED. So that means the filter WAS CHANGED before - it was just over filled.
So that five minute cleaning was "mineral spirits" - to get varnish out of the transmission pdf link
and then they put a "treatment" in -
so when I do material safety sheets on "transmission treatment" I get either mineral oil or diesel as the main ingredients...
