Are Derelict Bohemians so bad? Stories of dark spirituality and martial arts training and Gypsies

Poor "Bobby Byrne" was a Bohemian
to the last degree. Whenever he was
"in funds" nobody was readier to assist
derelict Bohemians than he. Moreover he
had a remarkable capacity for winning
confidences and gathering around him men
who would willingly do anything for
"Bobby."
Dark Side of Spirituality • Ft. Matt Thornton • Martial Arts Journey - a talk in the pub between two martial arts fighters

About half way through the vid - the "role model" really lays into what he feels to be the ultimate evil (apparently):

"Derelict Bohemians."

So since I had never heard those two words together - I searched it.

The Telegraph Newspaper, Australia, 1906

So in the first example - it's not used as a total rejection but rather as more of a continuum - a journalist editor - newspaper man - is a literary Bohemian, helping his fellow Bohemians who are derelicts....

“Did I tell you, I live in New York
— derelict bohemians en masse — actors,
directors, dancers, musicians everyone. We
four are the most talented, most intelligent,
most beautiful people I’ve met. I thank you
and I love you. I’d like to thank my family,
without whom I would never have been able
to graduate from this school. My gradu-
ation from this school is, without a doubt,
the most challenging of any of my accom-
plishments. There is a certain fraternity es-
tablished among MBA graduates. We may
not be the best of friends, but it’s a wonder-
ful feeling to know that if you are in real
need of help, any classmate you call will be
at your side.

So....

this appears to be more how it was used - some private academy for the arts... upper middle class - snobby....and NOT based on the actual meaning of how it was used 100 years ago. In other words FAUX "derelict bohemians."

Bohemianism - Wikipedia

This use of the word bohemian first appeared in the English language in the 19th century to describe the non-traditional lifestyles of marginalized and impoverished artists, writers, journalists, musicians, and actors in major European cities.

The term emerged in France in the early 19th century when artists and creators began to concentrate in the lower-rent, lower class gypsy neighborhoods.

Oh on the contrary - they argue it's NOT gentrified even though it's no longer derelict.... Fascinating.

So there is a BAD "derelict Bohemian" and then there's a HIP Bohemian that's supposedly not yuppie - this I am skeptical of.
