Separating Earth and Sky: Is Early Greek Music Harmonics "expert" Siemen Terpstra - and Terpstra Keyboard

Separating Earth and Sky?

Sounds like Abraham Seidenberg and Lord Raglan!!

Hmm - the "whole" book is supposedly available from 2015 but the dropbox link is not working...

http://www.siementerpstra.com/writings/Terpstra-EarthandSky_0_Introduction.pdf

So this is a detailed overview of the book, as per chapter sections.

The connection of Pythagoras to Sankhya philosophy looks interesting.

Otherwise I'm really not seeing much that is interesting - it's basically an overview of introductory material. No real analysis....

Author got a philosophy degree in the late 60s. cool.

Got a sitar in 71 - year I was born. cool.

80s - got Canadian art grant to build experimental instruments to chart the hundreds of Indian tunings.

Then author discovers Ernest McClain - oops! I corresponded with McClain briefly.

Ah - so the book title is a head nod to McClain - I get it! Oops - this author fell under the spell of closeted Freemasonry (Platonic irrational magnitude cosmology)....

Yeah so the author was doing the writing of the book in the 1980s....

Oh well - let's see what we can "cull" from the writings.

https://soundcloud.com/ism-studio/  I'm listening to the analog Dub mix - the http://www.dubbhism.org/2018/02/the-mighty-i-lodica-passing-thru.html  blog clued me into this Terpstra writer. I actually recognize the name - so I must have read that author before....

yeah this is just rehashing McClain's research....but the chapter on Anaximander and the Apeiron is interesting....

So he's trying to understand how the opposite of substances could be balanced through Apeiron, the infinite. He has not realized the secret of noncommutative phase from music harmonics! And why should he? (I'm assuming Siemen is a male author)... Ernest McClain is not going to explain it! haha.

But alas - he relies on McClain for the answer:

So right here - the author falls for McClain promoting Archytas's Harmonic Mean "bait and switch" of what used to be the noncommutative Subcontrary Mean! oops.

Another one bites the dust! I guess it's all down hill from here folks! Too bad Siemen Terpstra didn't dig deeper. Yep - promotion of the irrational magnitude tuning is soon to follow, of course.

That's all she wrote. OK I google the name to discover infamy on youtube for making the experimental music instruments....

glad to see youtube is working again! It was completely BROKEN earlier tonight. haha.
The keyboard layout follows a design proposed by Siemen Terpstra
So best means to achieve just tuning and microtonal tuning scales - cool. more on the Terpstra Keyboard

The Terpstra Keyboard was an American Festival of Microtonal Music production made with support from Maldeb Foundation
 http://terpstrakeyboard.com/

So it's a 56 note scale apparently for 5 octaves - so any scale can be played on it. Pretty amazing! This rivals Alain Danielou's keyboard!!

Siemen Terpstra talks about his invention!
