I had an interesting chat on the city bus around this same time period - 2006 - with a young University student from India. He bragged to me that he was helping develop televisions that could fold. I said, "Ok but what about the tigers in India?" He didn't have a response but I definitely surprised him with my question!!
Now almost twenty years later we know the answer. India has done awesome work at great risk to its lower class citizens who have to risk their lives with the wild tigers nearby.

In the last five years alone, tigers have attacked members of the rural population 70 times, with 65 of those attacks being fatal.

Born Free’s Living with Tigers initiative operates right on the front line. Seven tiger reserves in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh are linked by forest corridors that allow tigers to travel between them. In the nearby villages, volunteers are recruited as “tiger ambassadors” to patrol the area and recognize signs of tigers activity. Mobile education units teach local children about the value of conservation. Women are trained to be tourist guides, boosting their financial independence and employment levels.
