A P.O. Box will not suffice as proof of current residency in Minnesota: Yet a street address establishes primary residency

  People experiencing homelessness are not required to have a physical address to establish residency in Minnesota.

RV user has UPS as primary residence street address! video

 Use a UPS Store. You get a real residential street address, and can use that address for court-related correspondence, such as certified mail. It'll look like:

Your Company Name
123 Main St
Apt 414 (or Unit 414 - your mailbox number)
Your City, ST, 10001

Interesting other perk - you can shift court jurisdiction to the UPS store address territory, if that happens to be more favorable than your personal court jurisdiction. We have property in like.. 7 counties or something at this point and it's VERY handy to pick my court system for all things except eviction (which, in my state, have to be done in the county of the property).\

Using a UPS store as your legal address for residence purposes is generally not recommended for several reasons. UPS stores primarily provide mailbox services, which are intended for receiving mail and packages, rather than serving as a residential address. Here are some reasons why using a UPS store as your legal address for residence purposes may not be appropriate:

  1. Legal requirements: In many jurisdictions, you are required to have a physical address where you actually reside to establish legal residency. A UPS store address may not meet this requirement as it is not a place where you live.
  2. Proof of residency: Certain organizations and government entities may require proof of residency, such as a lease agreement, utility bills, or a driver's license with your residential address. A UPS store address is unlikely to be accepted as proof of residency in such cases.

 Importantly, you cannot use it more for business purposes than for actual residential reasons (such as sleeping, eating, etc.).

If you're present in Minnesota for more than 183 days over the course of a year and maintain a living place—an abode—which is a place with living quarters, sleeping quarters, and cooking facilities, you're going to be considered a Minnesota resident.

The second thing the state looks at is something called domicile—where you live. Are you ingrained in the community?

There are five factors the state considers to determine domicile:

  1. Your physical presence in that state;
  2. Your family and community connections;
    • Where you go to church, if you do;
    • Where all of your family is located, including your spouse and children; and
    • Whether you grew up in that place.
  3. Another category is professional and business relationships:
    • Were you employed where you receive payment for your services?; or
    • Do you have business relationships with a supplier? Is your main supplier in Minnesota?

The 183-Day Rule

This rule analyzes whether a person is physically present in Minnesota for more than half the year.

  Does selling your home in Minnesota revoke your resident status for tax purposes?  Not by itself.  Take the case of a couple who sold their home, purchased an RV, and decided to travel the country for a while.  They took steps to establish their domicile in a neighboring state by getting a mailing address there, registering to vote there, and obtaining a driver’s license in the state.  Despite these measures, the couple were still deemed Minnesota residents because they had failed to establish their physical presence in the other state.  Simply moving away from Minnesota does not prevent Minnesota from treating you as a resident. You must affirmatively establish a new domicile somewhere else, which generally means you must set down roots in a new state.

  But when the Sanchez’s also admitted they hadn’t spent any time in South Dakota, they lost their case. They had to pay back taxes, plus penalties and interest.

So, the moral to the story: it isn’t enough to choose a new state, go there for a week, fill out the paper work and then take off with no intention of returning to your new state of domicile.

200 sq. ft. or bigger here is our rule - per our Zoning and Development Codes. Bigger than 200 sf = a building permit, which requires a foundation/anchorage.

Permanent Address service!!

 https://www.postscanmail.com/pricing.html

 One key use of a permanent address is for official documentation. It is the address individuals provide on identification cards, driver’s licenses, and other legal documents. This stability is crucial for government records, tax purposes, and accessing services that require a reliable and lasting point of contact.

A permanent address is also vital for communication and receiving mail.

Our staffed locations will always be ready to receive and store your mail and packages, instead of sitting on your porch for porch pirates to take, or in your exposed mailbox for anyone to break into.

 DVS reviewed the Federal Real ID documentation requirements and determined that only one financial document may be used for proof of residency. The second document must be another acceptable document from the REAL ID list. The Required Documents list has been updated on the website.
