My primary occupation is a secondary caregiver of my mom - not a state-paid PCA

Many adult children wonder how to get paid to be a caregiver for their parents.

If you are the primary family caregiver, you may be eligible for monthly compensation.

I am not compensated since I'm a secondary caregiver but the state of Minnesota recognizes that this saves money overall for senior care costs.

Minnesota is home to 640,000 family caregivers who diligently care for a loved one. However, most of these caregivers struggle to find compensation and often work completely for free. The value of this unpaid work is estimated at $8.6 billion per year, highlighting the urgency in paying family caregivers for their care work.

In Minnesota, a person requiring a caregiver can hire their family member to work for them, allowing them to receive compensation, or bring another caregiver into the home. The family member must first enroll as a personal care assistant to become eligible for this home-care program. You’ll need to pass a one-time test after completing online training, although prior care experience is not required. You can learn more about this program and its requirements

A secondary caregiver may assume some responsibilities for individuals who cannot care for themselves, but these responsibilities are far fewer than those of the primary caregiver.

“Being a secondary caregiver can be difficult because you may feel like you don’t have control of the situation in any direction,”

explains Scott Williams, co-founder of Embracing Carers, an international initiative to support caregivers.
