Here's an idea for those who want a cheap hub connector. You will not be building a house with this, but it would be well suited for structures of about 20 feet in diameter.

The building industries is one of the best places to search if you are looking for inexpensive components mass produced in large quantities. Off-the-shelf will usually provided the best cost solution for your project.

In this case, Simpson Strong-Tie manufactures the LSTA metal strap which is designed to resist tension loads in wood-to-wood applications. This light strap tie utilizes a staggered nail pattern to help minimize wood splitting. The LSTA is designed for use on the edge of 2x members. They have many length variations of the LSTA, but the LSTA15 and the LSTA18 have very convenient hole size and locations suited for creating a hub connector. Screw holes are for #9 or #8 wood screws. The straps are 20 gauge steel (.0375" thick) and galvanized. At the time of this writing, they sell online for about $1.25. Two connectors can be cut from each strap using metal shears. For a 6-spoke hub, that equates to $3.75 per hub. The central hole is 1/2" diameter, but because of the 6 overlapping connectors, I would use a 3/8" bolt to join them.

The Hempel Effect

Visually, the frequency and amplitude changes but the EAR hears no difference - both phases are the Perfect Fifth just inverted as undivided yin-yang (the Taiji). I was discussing noncommutative phase with Nobel physicist Brian Josephson - and he said that I didn't understand how octaves were a geometric logarithm - so that C to G is 3/2 yet G to C is 3/4 as the harmonic series. So I tried to point out to him that since the 2 and 4 are the SAME C as "pitch" - then in the same octave, when doubled back, you can not HAVE the same G as Both the Perfect Fifth and Perfect Fourth. Why? Because 3/4 is the reverse direction in time - so that now the "3" is the denominator as a new root tonic. And so the harmonic series assumes this is a logarithmic equation as a ratio that can be inverted - but you can not evenly divide the octave and the Perfect Fifth since 2 does not go into 3 evenly. So this means that 3/4 is actually C to F while C to G is 3/2 and the C to F was derived from doubling 2/3. So this is called the "phantom tonic" in music theory and reveals the noncommutative phase origin of the music harmonics - as Alain Connes recognizes. Let us draw up a fundamental vibration with its first and second harmonic overtones [1:2 and 2:3]….if we then shift the phase relationship, we get a totally different course of the combined curve; that is, of the pressure course [amplitude and frequency] which is apparently effective in the final analysis. Anyone who actually knows how to play music would not fall for this bait and switch! What is (7, 5)? It is a Perfect Fourth which is the PITCH of C to G! "The term subcontrary may refer to the fact that a tone based on this mean reverses the order of the two fundamental musical intervals in a scale. Or as Professor Borzacchini states: " These remarks raise the question of the difference between the ancient Pythagorean ‘musical’ perception as displayed in the Pythagorean idea of ‘linear number’ in Boethius [Philolaus] or in Nicomachus, and the modern ‘geometrical’ perception of the linear numerical magnitudes."
