Quora tries to dismiss "relativistic mass" as an outdated term... of symmetric mathematics! Negaparticles debunks the claim.

 The amount of energy and momentum that a body has depends on who is looking. The same vehicle that moves very fast (has lots of kinetic energy, lots of momentum) relative to me may appear to be at rest (no kinetic energy, no momentum) to you, if you are traveling alongside in another vehicle at the same speed.

Why does someone have to "look" (i.e. make an external measurement) for a photon to have mass or not? If we LISTEN to the source of a photon then while it has a zero rest frame it STILL has relativist mass as momentum energy from the future. The conservation of momentum is violated by de Broglie's Law of Phase Harmony. That scientist conveniently ignores the de Broglie-Einstein relation. oops.

 So, based on these ideas, one might flip your question around. Why on Earth should a particle have to have mass in order to carry energy or momentum?

Misunderstanding the above statement leads to the confusion that all energy has mass or that energy is a type of mass. This is exactly wrong.

Mass is a type of energy.

So all mass contains energy, but all energy does not contain mass.

In reality, they have momentum. Momentum is usually a better way to discuss the energy of a photon, because though it doesn’t have any bound mass, like I said, they do respond to gravity, by their momentum.

 There’s a handy little paper by Martin van der Mark and Gert (not the Nobel) ‘t Hooft called Light is Heavy. It talks about a balance scale, and explains why a box containing hot gas is heavier than a box containing cold gas. Imagine something like a gedanken spring steel box in space full of gedanken spring steel bullets ricocheting around inside. When you push the box, you have to push against the bullets bouncing off the side you’re pushing against. When I tap my magic wand and make those bullets move faster, you find it harder to get the box moving. So the box has more mass. Hence “although nothing at all is at rest inside the box, the gravitational mass is equal to the rest mass of the box as a whole”.

But it can never go as fast as light because it is light, going around and around. Accelerating an electron can be likened to stretching a helical spring. Getting the electron moving is like deforming an open circle of spring steel into one turn of a helix. The energy required increases as we attempt to deform it further. As we accelerate more and more, the helix is effectively stretched straighter and straighter. But a photon travels at c, it can’t travel in a straight line at c and still be going around in circles at c. It would have to go faster than light to do that. And light doesn’t go faster than light.  OK. We know that gluons are supposed to be bosons like photons are bosons. We know that when you trap a massless photon in a mirror-box you increase the mass of the system. The Wikipedia article continues: “most of a proton’s mass comes from the gluons that bind the current quarks together, rather than from the quarks themselves. While gluons are inherently massless, they possess energy… and it is this that contributes so greatly to the overall mass of protons (see mass in special relativity)”.

Let’s open the box

That matches what we know about the photon in the box. When you open the box, the photon departs at c, and the box is a radiating body that loses mass, just like Einstein said in his E=mc² paper. We can then say that electron-positron annihilation is rather like opening one box with another, whereupon each is a radiating body that loses all its mass and then there’s no boxes left. Because the electron is like a photon in a box of its own making. Photon momentum is a measure of resistance to change-in-motion for a wave moving linearly at c, whilst electron mass is a measure of resistance to change-in-motion for a wave going around and around at c. And electron charge is what you get when you wrap a field-variation into a spin ½ standing-wave spinor configuration. Standing wave, standing field. OK, that hangs together.
