Mathematically, circles embody change without change. A point moving around the circumference of a circle changes direction without every changing its distance from a center. It's a minimal form of change, a way to change and curve in the slightest way possible. And of course, circles are symmetrical.

So this emphasis by Strogatz as the secret of the calculus is also a secret head nod to John Scotus Erigena, the monk featured in Professor David F. Noble's book, "The Religion of Technology."
For there is underlying all Eriugena's doctrine of the origin of things the image to which he often referred, namely, that of a circle, the radii of which are united at the centre. The centre is God, the radii at a point near the centre are the primordial causes, the radii at the circumference are phenomena.
And thus we have NeoPlatonic scientific Christianity starting in the 9th Century but obtained from the Muslims.
So Erigena was inspired by Boethius promoting Platonic philosophy:
The relationship between the ever-changing course of Fate and the stable simplicity of Providence is like that between reasoning and understanding, between that which is coming into being and that which is, between time and eternity, or between the moving circle and the still point in the middle.'.
For both Eriugena and Boethius, the degree to which a soul can infuse itself with the Godhead which is the omnipresent center, it can also be absorbed in its undivided, non-dual nature, and cease to experience the distension of being torn in multiple directions thus attaining beatitude.[61]

So here was have "nondual" as supposedly a materialistic idealized circle!! Sorry that is NOT the true meaning of "not-two." haha.
Eriugena's influence was greater with mystics, especially Benedictines, than with logicians, but he was responsible for a revival of philosophical thought which had remained largely dormant in western Europe after the death of Boethius.
So we know that Boethius in turn was trying to understand Archytas - the secret of irrational geometric mean from music theory!!

Now Strogatz admits that calculus is based on an idealized fiction that breaks down at the foundation of reality - the quantum level but then he emphasizes that with the Schroedinger wave equation we have the calculus required again even at the subatomic level.
But in fact this is a reference to the Poisson Bracket, as Math Professor Ian Stewart explains in his book, "Why Beauty is Truth: A History of Symmetry."
But we now know that indeed you can do quantum mechanics WITHOUT Schroediinger and that Schroedinger was inspired by de Broglie yet Schrodinger had to ignore relativity - and thus the secret of noncommutative phase of de Broglie's Law of Phase Harmony from pure time as frequency energy that is negative energy from the future.
And so that is why Professor Basil J. Hiley says we do not even need probability waves based on Schroedinger but instead we can use Noncommutative calculus as quantum algebra.
So then Strogatz refers back to Zeno's Paradox (that was supposedly disproven by calculus) based on the halving of distance to a wall. The only problem with this is we now know that the Casimir Effect kicks in when the distance is small enough - and the dynamic Casimir Effect means that the Virtual Photons can be "captured" - so that the negative energy of the future can be turned into positive photon energy.
And in fact Newton realized this secret from reading Lucretius.
