So the Dealer Mechanic reports there is NO code problem and no "check engine light" so it can NOT be the pressure sensor - and MUST be the "sending unit." So I will use fuel cleaner (Techron) to see if it fixes the sending unit.
I'm "anti-civ" or a primativist. Oops! the 80% phosphoric acid rust converter hit the fuel sensor pigtail connector. I didn't know that's what it was before but NOW I do since my fuel gauge no longer works. haha.
ACDelco 16238399 GM Original Equipment Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor
$8 for that pigtail connector part - looks promising!
I think this is the part - $31

Yep!
Think the 02-04 is by the filler neck intake?
ok...
yep that's it.
part 3.
1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
2. Disconnect the fuel tank pressure sensor electrical connector (3).
3. Open the retaining clip.
4. Remove the fuel tank pressure sensor.
Come to find out my p0446 and p0440 was the Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor giving me a faulty reading. Lucky me on the 02-04 the sensor is located on the back, upper left, next to the filler neck opening.
Yeah I used a bicycle pump to have compressed air to clean off any baking soda but nothing came out - it is definitely phosphoric acid that got back there. oops!
Signs of a bad fuel tank pressure sensor
If the sensor itself is bad, there’s really only one thing that will happen. The check engine light will come on.
Anytime this light comes on, you should get it checked out; a faulty sensor might not be so bad, but there are many other, more serious things that can trigger this light. It's best to be safe.
If your fuel system does have a pressure problem, you’ll see these signs:
- Your check engine warning light comes on
- Your fuel consumption increases noticeably
- A loss of power and acceleration
- Hard starting
- Stalling
- Black smoke coming out of tailpipe
- Gasoline dripping from tailpipe
- Your engine runs rough
strange - it doesn't make your fuel gauge messed up?

FOUND IT!!
Yes the Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor does mess it up the "miles range" data and fuel gauge!
Awesome - that must be the problem.
