Sealing my new wood stove "fire blanket" in silicone: The Harbor Freight Grill Blanket

So this "fire blanket" is fiberglass in silicone. A comment complains the edge is not covered in silicone and therefore the blanket "sheds" fiberglass everywhere.

So will a "welding blanket" also "shed" fiberglass everywhere? Because that's what I just got.

The downside is that fiberglass loses small sheds that irritates the skin. To avoid this, and to increase other features like heat resistance, fiberglass fabric gets a coating.

So mine might already have a coating. I'll check.

Well, you can't always get it right. Unfortunately, this welding blanket is not effective. Grinding and welding sparks burn right through the blanket leaving flammable surfaces vulnerable.

hmm...

Arc welder spatter and slag drops burns holes in blanket with no protection for whatever is under neath. One welding job and it looks like swiss cheese. Woven fiberglass unravels wherever hole is burned.

Sounds like I definitely need to cover it in silicone.

Any snag will open up a hole too easily. But it holds up to welding spray well. I should’ve bought the more expensive professional version that HF carries.

call it a GRILL BLANKET - ? OK!

only for light duty welding, messy fiberglass

I notice most of the good reviews have nothing to do with it's use as a welding blanket. Biggest complaint is how much fiberglass dust is in the air anytime you move it. This stuff is nasty! Wetting it helps but... high current electricity and water?? With high heat welding it will burn through. I wish HF would start making these with the Nomex weave fabric instead of fiberglass. HF can just relabel these fiberglass blankets as "grill blankets".

Someone bought it for same reason as me:

Compared to pricing for other "fireproof" blankets, this is nearly a steal. I do weld, but bought this for placement underneath a tent stove to protect the tent floor; and the price of the fancy blanket that other vendors offer is well over twice the cost of this product.

someone else:

 it itches like he!!

So I'm definitely gonna cover this in silicone first.

I can at least spray it with the camp silicone. That should help. Kiwi silicone spray. I think there's a little left...

The SF-G or SF-R types are supposedly good. (silicone-impregnated fiberglass)
