So the good things:
I can stand up in this tent!
It is warmer.
There is a ground floor (more warmth).
There are center guy loops for center stakes - more warmth.
The downside:
This tent is cheaper than the smaller one person canvas tent - and why? Well it is off gassing a strong "vinyl" smell. It's not PVC that I can tell. I'm hoping it's the glue that was used for the seams.
I'd like to think the smell would dissipate - and maybe it will. But very likely it won't.
So I'm glad I ordered the canvas tent originally - even though it is part polyester - it truly has NO SMELL at all! We breath some 20,000 times a day or more - and if you are spending all your time in the tent then you really want clean air.
So even though the canvas tent is smaller and not as warm - at least I can breathe clean air. haha.
Now the Western review said nothing about the smell but then he's getting free tents - I assume - and free stoves, etc. and who knows what. https://elixirfield.blogspot.com/2020/10/ordered-much-larger-3-4-person-tipi.html

The buyer reviews say it is VINYL which is same as PVC and this is Silver lined Tent Polyester. So I'm sure this is what they used to make the tents.
As I blogged before - I was not sure if this tent would off gas or not!
So he's not gonna say anything bad about the product.
He pretends to be objective but obviously he's not since he never says anything bad unless it's some very minor thing not even worth mentioning. haha.
Polyurethane, a petrochemical resin that contains isocyanates, is a known respiratory toxin. Uncured polyurethane can cause breathing problems such as asthma. ...
So I'm not just being "sensitive" - rather this is just an objective fact.
The issue is - will it "cure" or not? I have the teepee set up in the back yard but I have to take it down tomorrow.
I guess maybe I will use THIS tipi for my composting toilet? haha.
I would rather be cold in a small canvas tent but able to breath clean air.
Again THAT's why I ordered the more expensive canvas tent.
This FREE tent also does not have the "adjustable straps" as advertised. Mr. Rockie said he told his production factory to go back to the adjustable straps - when I asked him if he was going to change his advertising images on his website! haha. Who knows.
It takes a full 30 days for the floors to cure, so it's ideal to wait 30 days before putting area rugs on the surface.
So that's for a "polyurethane" floor. So maybe the smell WILL go away? They say that Off gassing is not the strong smell at first but the long term subtle fumes...
If they're placed on the flooring too soon, they can impede the curing process, trapping solvents in the wood.
Right - it smells like solvents. So maybe they will dissipate!!
Polyurethane dry/cure time - Sawmill Creek Woodworking ...
Jun 5, 2010 — As long as it is emitting and odor, it's still curing.
Wow - so maybe it really is just the SOLVENTS?!!
Considering that high-end 4-season tents use PU, I'd say you shouldn't worry about it as long as you store it in a cool, dry place and never store it wet. Silnylon is great, and doesnt have the propensity to peel, but also can't be repaired the way a PU coating can.
https://www.goodcampingtents.com/water-resistance/
Usually, apply a PU layer on the inside of the foil (outer or floor foil), in order to protect the polyurethane from the action of ultraviolet (UV) radiation or abrasion. This causes the water to permeate the fabric, but it doesn’t get inside. Thus, drying becomes a long process as the whole fabric is wet and the water must evaporate from the entire volume of the fabric.
Some nylon foils have a layer of Durable Water Repellent (DWR) coating, applied to the tent surface. This causes water to slip on foil surface, preventing it to get wet. But this layer can`t resist than 1-2 years.
The advantage of a Polyurethane coating is the fact that water vapor can pass it, making a breathable material. When it rains, water vapor can no longer cross the wet material and during the rain, we must ensure the tent ventilation, possibly by opening entries.
What it does a breathable PU is its characteristic to absorb water, the polyurethane is hydrophilic.
Pay attention! Water is a very slow solvent for polyurethane. If you pack your tent when it`s wet and he has polyurethane coating, layers will paste and turn into a solid ball. Next time, when you want to use it, it`s no longer possible to open.
Poliurentan coating is slow aging. It takes years for it to deteriorate. To extend the life of this kind of tents, the manufacturers, insert titanium dioxide (TiO2) into PU layer, in order to make this layer resistant to the ultraviolet (UV) radiation.
This type of coating is suitable for most camping tents. Prices are lower than models with silicon coating.

Getting rid of polyurethane smell from Sierra Designs tent fly?
It just has a stronger polyurethane chemical smell than it used to. The tent is in excellent condition and I don't see any flaking of the PU material. Is this due to the aging of the PU coating, and is there anything that can be done to reduce the chemical odor? I tried airing it out for 5 days outside, and there's only a little improvement.

After years of use, the PU coating can break down and delaminate. This is more likely if a tent is damp or has been soaking in water for longer than five minutes. There is typically a foul odor similar to vomit or urine present when the PU coating is breaking down.
So no - it's brand new and NOT from the PU breaking down...
OK it MUST be PVC and not Polyurethane Tent
Yeah here it is - it IS PVC - says "tent" fabric.
300D Polyester Oxford waterproof/pvc coating tent fabric
That's unfortunate - that smell is NOT going to go away. It's PVC - toxic through and through.
THIRD whole sale supply of PVC coated polyester for tents.
Oops!
I really hoped it was PU and not PVC but my NOSE told me it was PVC...
You can get it as a PU coating - NOT PVC. So I will email Pomoly to tell them to switch to PU coating.
haha.
So now I told the other company that had this same tent at 50% off the "retail" price - I told them to please cancel the order and refund it. That tent is "waiting on their dock" for "pick up." So we'll see what they say! YOu can't "dispute" an order till ten days after it SHIPS. But I guess it has not shipped yet? Or it's not been ten days? we'll see.
A quick and easy way to seal PVC is with silicone.
I'm gonna spray the inside of the tent with silicone!
So the other company insists it's NOT PVC. Hilarious. I know it's PVC. I sent them the links but they insist still it's NOT pvc. haha.
Meanwhile:
The Roof Sealants claim they are silicone but they are NOT - they're Siloxane!!
