Using SRI (System of Rice Intensification), farmers use 90% less seed, 50% less water, and produce up to 3 times more rice--more crop per drop! Co-founder Ken Lee explains the basics of how it works, and why it's so important, especially in the developing world. A great alternative to hybrid and genetically modified seed use.
The key tenets of SRI are to plant smaller, younger seedlings to reduce transplant shock, to plant them at wider spacing in rows (rather than randomly in clumps) to minimize competition and facilitate weeding, and to keep soils moist but not continuously flooded to promote soil health. SRI practices result in: Less work and disease risk for women due to fewer and lighter seedlings to manage, upright weeding, and no work in standing water. More water available for other crops, ecosystems and communities

I was reading a list of the Recommended Supplies for the Gold Rush into Yukon Canada - I think it was 50 pounds of bacon per person. So I guess since you go in the winter then it stays good.

The way I figure - you can't eat money! So who knows when civilization is gonna collapse.
It's already partially collapsed to be sure.
The Canadian government determined each person going to Dawson from Skagway or Dyea needed three pounds of food per day for a whole year. Food alone would weigh in at a minimum of 1,095 pounds (~497 kg) or just over half a ton. But for a prospector, adding necessary clothes and equipment to the food could easily double the total load, and thus came to be known as a "ton of goods." If purchased in the U.S., the goods were subject to customs duties payable to the North-West Mounted Police who also enforced the amount of goods required. Just between February and June of 1898, the Mounties collected $174,000 in duties. In today's money, that is about $4.9 million dollars!
150 lbs. bacon
400 lbs. flour
25 lbs. rolled oats
125 lbs. beans
10 lbs. tea
10 lbs. coffee
25 lbs. sugar
25 lbs. dried potatoes
Well I never considered "pounds" of food before but this Moroccan restaurant tried selling their lunch by "weight." I don't remember how much weight I bought.
Still with intense meditation then the food supply should be able to drop to one tenth the amount needed. So that's about a third of a pound a day.
Because 3,500 calories equals about 1 pound (0.45 kilogram) of fat, it's estimated that you need to burn about 3,500 calories to lose 1 pound.
Sitting, by comparison, only burns 60 to 130 calories an hour.
So yep makes sense! Sit for 10 hours = 1000 calories = one third of a pound of food....
A vegetable with 30 calories per 100 grams has a low calorie density, while chocolate that has 550 calories per 100 grams has a very high calorie density.
So almond butter is 600 calories per 100 grams...
Lentils are 100 calories per 100 grams.
Jasmine rice is 130 calories per 100 grams.
Bacon is 500 calories per 100 grams.
So 450 grams = 1 pound approximately.
2500 calories a day is RDA for a male
So 1 pound of bacon = a days worth of calories
So if they eat the bacon over the winter - cuz it's gotta be kept cold - it would last up north probably eight months at least....
How much is in a Twinkie?
about 300 calories.
So 40,500 calories of Almond Butter - and if I'm meditating all day - that's probably a couple months at least - living good. Add the lentils and rice - and I could get six months out of it.
Now I just need vitamin C and other vitamins. Almond Butter has calcium.
I transplanted Stinging Nettles but just one plant. It is spreading by root already. That's a great vitamin C source - just dry it so it stays green.
Mineral Properties and Dietary Value of Raw and Processed Stinging Nettle (Urtica dioica L.)
Proximate composition, mineral, amino acid, and vitamin contents were determined, and nutritive value was estimated based on 100 g serving portions in a 2000 calorie diet. Results show that processed nettle can supply 90%–100% of vitamin A (including vitamin A as β-carotene) and is a good source of dietary calcium, iron, and protein. We recommend fresh or processed nettle as a high-protein, low-calorie source of essential nutrients, minerals, and vitamins particularly in vegetarian, diabetic, or other specialized diets.
So it fixes nitrogen. My goal is to keep transplanting more and have it spread across my hay fields.
yeah so you lose about half the nutrition when it's dried (cooked)...
So I had a vegetarian friend say how we vegetarians just have to eat more than meat eaters. I was vegetarian at the time. But actually I don't think he is really vegetarian. Anyway... so
I guess eating nuts is about the same calories as eating meat...

So it was cheaper to mail order a Bear Proof storage barrel from Canada - nearby Toronto - then from buying in the U.S.
At least $20 cheaper - more like $40 cheaper. Crazy.
I guess because Canada has way more bears - so the supply of bear storage barrels is much greater...
