Once Again - still no leaking! It's been almost four hours? Should have leaked by now if it was gonna leak...
It's Amazing - still no leaking!
This means the mineral oil treatment definitely helps enough to prevent a hugely expensive Remove and Replacement of the Rack and Pinion power steering system - as per below:
https://mechanics.stackexchange.com/questions/36291/replacing-rack-pinion-seal
So this is what it looks like?
the end of the R&P unit with the outer tie rod end and coupler (is that what it's called??) pulled off. The black portion of the is the seal. It is recessed into the end of the unit a bit over an inch. And so to REMOVE the SEAL without removing the whole Rack and Pinion?
Those are dangerous operation, if some mishap happens or you just have bad luck you can ruin the entire steering system, a scratch in the housing/rod or a forgotten metal shaving is enough to destroy it. Also clean everything thoroughly afterwards.Wow - so that's why people replace the WHOLE R & P instead of just the seal!! The labor and parts for a R & P replacement is around $1000.
The seals between the steering column and the rack and pinion or around the tie rod connections can shrink, crack, dry out or become unseated.https://www.moogparts.eu/blog/rack-and-pinion-system-leak.html
So as long as the leak does not get worse - you could just keep "treating" it with the mineral oil - to soften up the seal. It appears to be working!!
