OK I am sending back the Unopened Differential Cover and PML will send me a Machined one out

So as I researched the drilling and tapping issue - it's quite fascinating actually. But it turns out the "kit" I ordered is NOT for "new threads" but instead for fixing stripped threads. And that same kit was the one that PML had recommended I order.

So then for a "New thread" tap and drill - the tap is over twice as much as a "high speed steel" tap. And I don't have a high speed drill!! OK the Bauer 20 volt does go to 1700 RPM so I guess that is high speed enough. But I don't have a vice nor a drill press... and still would need the high speed tap and drill bit... without the above?

So then I would have to finagle a local machine shop to do the job. vid

If I had a Vice and a high speed drill (vid)- I'm not even sure what RPMs are required. My drill is not that fast and I don't have a vice - so the key is to have the tap go straight also.

This is why a drill press is really recommended for taping new threads - as PML also recommended to me. When they said - get a local machinist to do it with a drill press - I thought - yeah it's way easier to have them do it - as they have the set up required for this particular job.

Yeah just looking at the tools - it would easily cost me the shipping (of returning the first one and sending out the 2nd one) and machining costs.

So also I am not at all sure a local machine shop would do the job - since for them it is just one threaded hole - and they are busy going bigger jobs.

And so even if I got the tools then I'm not sure if I could do the job properly.

I don't have a work bench - no vice.

So far I got an adjustable tap wrench - but I didn't realize you need a vertical guide to keep the tap at 90 degrees - and using a machine press! (vid explains)

And so I also got a plug - but it was not the right kind - and only a dollar or so.

Basically the gas money was more than the tools - or about the same.

I ordered a tap - but it's the wrong size. So I'll see what else I need - if they will let me switch out the payment for something else or whatever their return policy is.

So this will work best - I'll get the PML cover on Friday and just send it right back - unopened. UPS gives that option.

Then PML will charge me the extra - about 50% increase in the price - precisely - to cover the shipping back the first one and the shipping out of the 2nd one plus the extra machining job.

That is perfectly reasonable on their part - plus they tried to advise me on how to do the job myself - if I wanted to. So I had a steep learning curve for a day. It was fascinating.

Wow - my own home city reproduces the rear differential for this car! It's - what - $1200 for the parts!! You figure - probably double that including the labor to rebuild it!

So better to spend a bit more for a good differential cover replacement - so that I can replace the oil - Before the rear differential fails on me!!

Considering it's a local company making the part - you gotta figure these things fail pretty often!!
