I was thinking how to mosquito proof the EcoEcho hermit hut - for summer use....
I have the Wilderness Lodge tent that is actually bigger than the hut - but I would have to take my tarps off first to then put the screen tent over the hut. Then put the tarps back on.
I suppose I can do this - it would not be too bad. And easier than trying to build an overhang extension to hang a mosquito net or tent off of, covering the front entrance...
Last sentence from the 2006 IBC commentary on Section 502.1 “The roof overhang on portions of a building where there are exterior enclosure walls does not add to the building area because the area is defined by exterior walls.”Quite the heated discussion! You'd think this would be a well-known answer.
This roof overhang over 34″ is not providing a useable space beneath it, why should it be considered a part of the building area?
But generally, any porch or extended, cantilevered overhang like yours is going to house or include people, goods and equipment and should be added to the gross building area.So if it was just to hang mosquito netting then it should not be included....
As this is a shop building, we can easily imagine material and equipment stored under this overhang. If this is combustible or involves flammable liquids, there could be a problem.
If the awning is truly attached to the building, and the building has its own roof system, then it should not be included in the building area, since the awning is not within the horizontal projection of the roof above. But, if the enclosed building”s roof is a portion of the awning, then the awning is a part of the horizontal projection of the roof and must be included in the building area.OK I remember now - the Gable-end eaves can't be more than 2 feet long.... (which would be long enough to hand mosquito netting from if I so chose....
I accidentally tore the edge of the roof tarp - not that bad but still should be repaired if possible.Roof overhangs shall not exceed 2 feet (610 mm) of horizontal projection beyond the exterior wall and the dead load of the overhangs shall not exceed 8 pounds per square foot (383 Pa).
