Crucially it has a lid. And so to order this through the mail - the only real means of finding it - would have been probably $30. This was $6.50
The other nice thing - this wok has a very definitive "edge" to it - so I can make a "rim" out of lime mortar or whatever - and that will be wider than the bottom of the wok but still check the wok to hold it. And then the hole will be wide enough for my Silverfire Survivor stove to fit through the hole...
OH here is the final test. How WIDE is the Silverfire Survivor stove?
Cast Iron Cook Top Diameter: 9 ¼” / 18 cmstrange - doesn't give the stove width but I guess it varies kind of.
So the Wok "rim" is over 11 inches. We should be good - the goal is to be able to PULL the Survivor stove OUT from the "fire box" - while the wok is covering the hole.
Yeah that front part of the stove doesn't look much wider than the cast iron top - maybe just over an inch.
OK so the fire box will look like this:
Only there will be a wall separation - to keep the smoke out.
OK - so the Wok should work! It will be a close fit but that's ok. The smaller the fire box the better - I don't have a lot of space to work with.
Next item....
I can't remember if this is the right one - but it's the same thing only it's 6 inches wide and 8 inches tall. The problem is, although it's ceramic - it still FLOATS. So I need to have a rock or weight attached to the bottom via the harness.... But this is definitely BIGGER than the 12 ounce mug - so that will save me a lot of effort and time in pulling up the well rope....
There's the well hole that I dug with a hand auger - so it's about 20 feet deep but a metal rod broke off since I was trying to drive it into too much pea gravel. I underestimated the cubic volume conversion... So I'm not even sure if this well will keep giving me enough water - already it's down to just a few gallons recharge per day, until I hit the metal rod.
So I might have to dig a whole other well - which will be my third well. The 2nd one got filled in by the run off water as I dug the well in the runoff ditch. I didn't realize the runoff water would have so much soil with it....
So that was about a 12 ounce mug. I don't need a lot of water and in the spring the water in the well is very high up. So it is easy to haul it out. But no longer.
Now I'll go look for weights and cordage or straps or whatever to make a harness.
The other issue is - ok so I get a few gallons but those 8 inches cover at least ONE gallon of water! I remember I was "hitting" the pipe - that's how I knew the cup was sinking into the water - fully. I didn't realize I was on the verge of breaking the mug. The water broke the fall but when the water got too low and I could not believe it was the bottom - at first I could not pull up a full cup. So I dropped it a couple more times with more speed to get the mug to sink better. SMASH!!
Since this is a SET of ceramic - that means I could use the smaller sizes as I work my way down into the last gallon. Kind of desperate but a gallon of water is actually a lot to drink.
I just need to make more than one harness with more than one weight.
If I dig a new well then it won't have gravel in the bottom nor a metal pipe - so I would get a few extra feet - maybe five more feet of recharge water. So it's probably worth the extra effort. Then I can use this new "bucket" to its best advantage.
I should measure HOW much water I can get out of this.
Digging a well is a TON of work - so if I can get TWO gallons a day with this new bucket - that's fine by me. I'll be very happy with that - I mean from now on through the winter. If I get ONE gallon a day - I can survive on that. It's not ideal. But oh well. I can always bring water from civilization "for now."....
When the bucket hits the water it dips and fills, and is pulled up with the rope.Yeah - maybe. I don't have much width room.
So it tends to float more than dip.
The bucket is supposed to be "plunged" down the well with the face of the bucket pointing down? hmm. I can't really do that either.
Wow - a LEATHER bucket! great idea! Soaks up the water - then it's heavier than the water. Also would not break from bottom contact!!
So eight inches - yeah that's barely enough space as the digging hole is 8 inches wide. So it can't really "tip" over easily.
