Children of the Cure tells the story of the only Medical Study that has two publications in the academic literature—telling precisely the opposite story—and how no one is bothered by this. Study 329 was a clinical study that began in 1994 giving a new antidepressant to teenagers. It has become the most famous clinical trial ever, leading to a fraud charge, a $3 billion fine, and a Black Box Warning.
So the book starts out explaining that how Benzos as tranquilizers were realized to be addictive - not by Big Pharma doctors as much as by the victims. So then Big Pharma argued that people labeled with anxiety were actually "depressed" and thus to be put on new Anti-depressant drugs... starting in the 1960s...
When Merck luanched another antidepressant, amitriptyline, in 1961, ...they decided to market depression as well as amitriptyline.... Frank Ayd....published a book titled Recognizing the Depressed Patient...Merck commissioned 50,000 copies and distributed it to physicians and psychiatrists. Amitriptyline quickly became the best-selling of this group of drugs...[tricyclics]....

It is about the 2001 infamous GlaxoSmithKline Study 329 that compared paroxetine with imipramine and placebo in 275 adolescents with depression. What is unique is that the Attorney General of New York State sued GlaxoSmithKline in 2004 for repeated and persistent consumer fraud in relation to concealing suicidality events on paroxetine, and, as part of a settlement, the company was mandated to make its internal study report for Study 329 publicly available.
Healy and his co-workers succeeded to get access also to the original case report forms, as they had been filled out by the investigators before they had been processed and coded by the company. I am not aware of any other drug trial in any area of medicine where independent researchers have had such access to data that are usually hidden deep in company archives.
The story that Healy, Le Noury and Wood tell in the book is one of organised crime to which drug regulators in the United States and the United Kingdom happily contributed, prioritising to protect the company’s commercial interests instead of the safety of the children. The FDA lied about what they knew and about what the trials had shown, and it prevented its reviewer from presenting incriminating data that showed an increase in suicidality with paroxetine at an Advisory Board meeting. When the FDA investigated the issue of suicidality for all the newer depression pills, it was done in a way that minimized the risk that the companies would come up with incriminating data, and the FDA believed flatly what the companies told them, with no checks.

I discussed this study in my 2013 book “Deadly medicines and organised crime” in a chapter called “Pushing children into suicide with happy pills.” Based on the many randomised trials that have now been carried out in children and adolescents, it is absolutely certain that “happy pills” do not make children happy. They don’t even work for depression but double the risk of suicide....

early SSRIs had serious nerve and liver damage effects...but also an increase in suicidal behavior...
OCD drugs then were created in the 1970s...
Luvox was used for both OCD and depression and was the Columbine massacre shooter drug used....

So people with "obsessive features" get homicidal...as Study 329 showed (later on)....
The New Yorker in 1998 described Zoloft as like drinking 55 cups of black coffee and Paxil as drinking 11 cups of black coffee.... yet Big Pharma denied this "stimulating agitating effect" of SSRIs....
So Prozac is actually an noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor at strong doses....

In 2001 when Prozac went off-patent, Paxil surpassed it in sales.
SmithKline marketing coined the acronym SSRI....Paxil was supposedly "selective" meaning no longer on the norepinephrine system..."selective away" NOT "directly to one targeted area" - [SmithKline made Paxil...Zoloft was made by Pfizer....
SSRIs can be very difficult to get off of without strong side effects...Eli Lilly began to market Prozac as having less "discontinuation syndromes."

But then it got marketed as an antidepressant called Cymbalta.... selling even more than Prozac at its peak use: $3 billion in sales...as an alternative to Vioxx (the pain killer)...
Cymbalta was the same as Zalutria - the right-handed isomer version of Prozac!! At first it was pulled for causing too many cardiac problems.
