The Holden Tarp Tent Shelter and Hex Peak shelter or Hexamid or 3 side Pyramid Tipi shelter: Unboxing the $10 Survival Tarp Shelter Kit (with set up instruction videos)

I've been watching "tarp shelter" vids on youtube. There are various attempts at making shelters with tarps. I don't really find any of them satisfactory. So I will study them again to see if I can zero in on one that seems to stand out. In the mean time I did learn a couple tricks.

So that Jute twine is only $2 and it breaks easily. But the advantage with Jute is that, as I learned yesterday, you can fluff it up so that it takes a spark to make a fire! That is a HUGE advantage because it's otherwise very very difficult to find fire starting "fluff" material. I usually rely on petroleum jelly rubs in cotton balls to start my fires.

The idea with the jute is that you make a loop in the grommet of the tarp and then pull that loop through the other side grommet and then close it off with the Carabiner. The set of Carabiners were $4. So that way you can have a door and some privacy and protection from the wind. Also the Jute can be used to tie the tarp off to a tree or make shift support pole tied off to the ground - a log or stick or rock or something.

Setup is very easy. Here’s how I like to do it:
  • Place the tarp on the ground and then stake down one of the long sides* from end to end. This will be the back of the tent.
  • Find the center point of the opposite long side and raise it to the desired height using a tent pole or stick (or tie it to a tree branch above).
  • Stake down the front corners of the tent, making sure all three walls are taught. If necessary, run a guy line from the pole/stick to a stake in front of the tent (as seen in the poncho picture above).

So now the question remains - why kind of shelter can we make with a 10 x 12 tarp? These Polyethylene tarps are not as toxic as a PVC tarp (no thanks!!) but they are not as strong and so easily tear. But a great advantage is these tarps are light and so this survival kit can be easily carried in a back pack - which I got for free from Free Craig's List. The tarp cost $4.

So now lets say I needed to "escape" on my bicycle - I can throw the above in my backpack and I could do make shift survival winter camping - of course I would have to rely on serious Tummo Heat from Meditation - along with a fire - to keep warm. I would hopefully have some layers of clothes and some food that I dumpster dive or something. Or lets say the car breaks down - and I am forced to spend the night outside. This Survival Shelter kit provides some insulation and dry space and maybe even some privacy.

Ok so now let's review the youtube vids I watched - on what kind of shelters we can make with that tarp - and how to light a fire using the Jute Twine, etc.

OK instead of reviewing past vids - I just searched 10 x 12 tarp shelter. I figure since that's what I have then I'll stick with vids that will work for this set up.
Square tarp as Holden Tent Shelter

So I didn't realize that even "high end" camping tarps are made of similar size. Here is a 10 x 13 camping tarp shelter vid.

OK he is using the main secret that I have seen. This is the THIRD vid I've seen with this tarp shelter secret - so that must be the real thing. You stake out the back corners and sides. Then you pull over or shift the front corners in by "90 degrees" to the back side far corner - So that means you pull it out and stake the corner. Then you stake the next grommet it. Then you take out the first corner stake and fold that over to the 2nd grommet. And then you replace that 2nd grommet stake back into the first corner grommet that has now been placed into the 2nd grommet stake location.

So to make a CLOSED HOLDEN  you do not stake out the first corner - but instead the 2nd grommet down the side (creating the extra material for the door).

This gives you a more narrow entrance that is higher up for the "A" frame of the shelter.

Then you can use a ski pole as a tent post or a stick or something and you put it in the center of the tarp. Then you use a second pole or post to pull out the back of the shelter - and this could be attached by using a rock or marble or something - even a clump of dirty - with some more Jute twine. And then another rope is tied at the front of the tarp to hole the post up.

Wow - this is the most impressive tarp shelter I've seen so far - in terms of space. But I'll keep watching. Also you would need something to cover the opening for winter use obviously -

OK this is a 9 foot x 9 foot tarp - and he does the same trick so again - the outer corner is pulled over to the 2nd grommet and staked at the locale, thereby creating more material to have an A frame opening.

The back corners are folded back under to stop off drafts and also provide some ground cover on the inside.

So instead of tying off the back part of the tarp - he puts in a 2nd pole in the back that is lower.

This third tarp shelter vid - there is more of a floor to the ground cover but also more of a front opening space

So that is the very precise same tarp of tarp I got. And they used a rock to tie off the back of the tarp.

He's got a nice big fire pit protected by a wheel rim. But I would still be concerned about sparks. I suppose it would work though.

4th Tarp shelter vid - same set up with pulling in the front corners for A frame

So he gives instructions on how to tie the special knots as well as how to set up the shelter. Pretty amazing vid!!

So that means I have THREE vids of the same kind of tarp shelter set up and as I said - I saw two previous vids of the same set up. So that's five vids of the same tarp set up - so that means it is the standard tarp set up.

Now this is 10 different tarp set ups for shelters - I have not seen this vid - but it should be very interesting!!

OK so now I remember that it was called the Holden Tarp Tent - as that vid gives the names for each of the shelters!

And sure enough he uses a Carabiner for the 4 season modification - to close off the front!!

David Canterbury (of tv fame) with 30 to 40 different tarp set ups? vid

OK he's also doing the Holden Tarp Tent - he doesn't call it that but says he's seen several vids of this type of shelter and so he wanted to make sure he also covered it, since he gets lots of views. haha.

OK now that I know what this shelter is called - I searched Holden Tarp Tent Shelter - and got a lot more new hits.
