Such a hierarchy is evident in music where pitch classes are organized in reference to pitch center (Podlipniak, 2016) and rhythm measures in reference to musical pulse (London, 2012). By taking into account that both of these features are not present in the vocal expressions of chimpanzees it is reasonable to assume that they were also absent in the vocal repertoire of the common ancestor of chimpanzees and humans and thus are relatively evolutionarily young innovations.
Although it has been proposed that musical structure (e.g., melody) was discovered by early humans due to the resemblance of musical sounds to the acoustic characteristics of human vocalizations (Purves, 2017), the real problem is why the nervous system of early humans started to interpret certain acoustic parameters as discrete pitch and rhythm units organized into syntactically based sequences.
This is a WESTERN MATH PROJECTION. haha. His math is limited. The empirical truth is not discrete but rather noncommutative phase as quantum nonlocal consciousness (that contains both discrete and the symmetric irrational magnitude continuum - as alain connes details).

 


 So here we have again - "pitch" as a "discrete unit" - not as the alchemical noncommutative phase secret!! One is NOT a number - so how can it be discrete? As Math professor Luigi Borzacchini points out - for the early Orthodox Pythagoreans, the Tetrad was neither discrete nor continuous.

Thank you Professor Podlipniak: As I reviewed your research, I realized that the concept of "noncommutative phase" is the secret, as it is neither discrete nor the continuum for pitch centre perception. Math professor Luigi Borzacchini did a study of the music origins of Western math, stating for early Orthodox Pythagoreans, music theory was "neither discrete nor the continuum." What happened is that the octave was defined as geometric mean squared which then covered up the undertone harmonic that is noncommutative phase. So in reality G=3=F at the same time while 1 is not a number, but instead logical inference as listening. And math professor Alain Connes has an excellent lecture on music theory and quantum relativity. Connes emphasizes that music theory is based on noncommutative phase with a geometric dimension of zero. So each point of space actually has a noncommutative nonlocal phase origin. Borzacchini states our brains do a Fourier transform that converts pure time-frequency into  a perceived 4D spacetime. Louis de Broglie's Law of Phase Harmony realized this same secret as well. So the original human culture - the San Bushmen, used music as quantum biology of noncommutative phase energy-information that is superluminal as de Broglie modeled.
