"the crime of fanaticism" - for being a monk or a priest or even a devote layman. Fascinating.

 "the crime of fanaticism"

for being a monk! During the French Enlightenment...

Loyal Catholics were accused merely of the crime of “fanaticism”.

priests loyal to the pope were sentenced to ten years in prison for the crime of "fanaticism
The Enlightened view of history was the story of the gradual emergence of mankind from barbarism, requiring that the old order be repeatedly destroyed in order to make room for “progress”—change that brought continuous improvement. Such progress, measured in worldly terms, was the highest good, replacing the salvation of souls, which was now condemned as a kind of deluded fanaticism. (Some philosophes did believe in personal immortality, but only in terms similar to those of ancient paganism.)

This radicalism was centered in the Jacobin Clubs—named for an abandoned monastery where they met—which roused the “little people” to action in the streets and enforced revolutionary orthodoxy. The club included priests, one of whom, the “red priest” Jacques Roux (d. 1794), led demands for economic equality.

The Terror

In the Reign of Terror, innumerable suspicious persons, including any priest who had not taken the oath, were systematically rounded up, some immediately killed by mobs, others subjected to speedy trials at the hands of revolutionary tribunals and carted off to the guillotine, which was the new, “efficient” instrument of mass execution.

Loyal Catholics were accused merely of the crime of “fanaticism”. Approximately five thousand priests were imprisoned at one time or another, many of whom never emerged alive. In contrast to the concern for efficiency symbolized by the guillotine, many died of disease while crammed into rotting ships. Nuns who continued to live in communities were subjected to mob violence and sometimes arrested, with sixteen Carmelites guillotined one by one as they chanted the Veni Creator (“Come, Creator Spirit”).8Lay people who were conspicuously devout or who harbored priests were also sometimes sentenced to death.

Noam Chomsky emphasizes that to get anything done you really have to be "fanatical" - and he means this in terms of activism as well. So for example qigong master Jim Nance trained for 12 hours a day - for years.

To be a "professional" - a doctor or pianist or chef - or any advanced training - requires fanaticism.

But only music and meditation do a deep brain transformation from fanaticism - to "break on through" to the other side....

And I suppose Mushrooms aka strong serotonin receptor activation....

Whereas workings as a vocation might work 12 hours a day but are not considered "advanced" training. Nevertheless - as Gurdjieff points out - the way of the FAKIR is through extreme physical labor. If relying on the secret of complementary opposites then the FAKIR finds the same secret as the YOGI (mental fanaticism) or MONK (emotional fanaticism). And so the Fourth Way is to integrate the previous three - and that is the true way of the past as well....

Of course we hear about Liberty ... Equality and Fraternity ... along with the Declaration of the Rights of Man as some of the more noteworthy outcomes of the French Revolution. But the maliciousness against the church isn't often mentioned. During the Reign of Terror ...from September 1793 to July 1794 ... priests were decapitated ... drowned ... and killed by angry mobs. Over the course of the Revolution ... over 20,000 laws were put in place to remove the Catholic Church's substantial authority and give it over to the state. Diplomatic and financial relations with the Holy See came to a halt ... all monasteries in France were suppressed ... their properties were seized ... and monastic vows were suspended. All priests loyal to the pope were sentenced to ten years in prison for the crime of "fanaticism."The public was to select all priests and bishops from now on. They were now under government supervision and were allowed to marry and divorce ... and marriage was now a civil issue. A new civil religion was introduced ... patriotism.

Transcription of the documentary! Cool.

I was waiting for the Plato connection... yet Benedictine monks also followed Plato (i.e. John Scotus Erigena of the 9th Century).... and this led to Freemasonry. Read "The Religion of Technology" by Professor David F. Noble. thanks

It's not "to balance" the male and female. Actually Kala as Time is Kali as Female Shakti energy. So the Female is first. "To balance" is a Western concept.

yes the "light" is not the final truth of reality - the light is not the Self as God. That is a common error - the spiritual ego.
