Justin Martyr knows the material of Paul, but he never mentions Paul by name. This means Paul's sayings were going around anonymously with a title like "the sayings of christ" or "the sayings of the apostles". A few examples: “Do nothing from selfish ambition… but in humility regard others as better than yourselves.” Paul (Philippians 2:3–4) “Christ commands humility and love of one’s neighbor, not seeking one’s own advantage.” Justin (1 Apology 33) “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. It is feasible that other named characters mentioned in the Gospels served as eyewitness informants for the evangelists. Each example must be evaluated on an individual basis. Some of the oral traditions may very well go back to the apostles. Peter might have been the source of the story about the healing of his mother-in-law. Of course, the evangelists did not obtain all their material directly from eyewitnesses. Certain traditions could have been accurately transmitted even when eyewitnesses were not involved in the process.
